Dominique Strauss-Kahn obviously had to be thrilled that he was granted bail yesterday. But a small logistical hitch has stood in the way of his freedom from Rikers Island.
Shocking as it may seem, the professional cycling world is again consumed by a doping controversy.
Brien Santarlas, a former Ropes & Gray patent lawyer, testified Thursday in the ongoing insider-trading prosecution of Zvi Goffer, a former Galleon Group Trader.
It's looking like it might be awhile before Jared Loughner has to stand trial for the January shooting of Gabrielle Giffords and 18 others.
The Wisconsin Supreme Court today ruled that it does not violate the Constitution to sentence a juvenile murderer to life without parole.
The insanity of the LinkedIn IPO on Thursday isn't the only thing making us feel like we're back in the late '90s.
With the exception of one high-profile SEC suit (Fabulous Fab, anyone?), regulators and prosecutors haven't pointed too many fingers at Goldman Sachs, post financial-crisis (at least not publicly).
The Oregon Supreme Court today ruled in favor of a woman's right to carry a concealed handgun and use medical marijuana.
Update [4:03EDT]: New York Supreme Court Judge Michael Obus Thursday afternoon approved Dominique Strauss-Kahn's bail package. He will be released on bail with $1 million cash, a $5 million bond, and around the clock monitoring, as proposed. He is scheduled to be released from Rikers Island on Friday, after the bail is posted. Earlier, it was revealed that Strauss-Kahn, the former head of the International Monetary Fund accused of sexually assaulting a chambermaid last Saturday, has been indicted on charges identical to those initially alleged. They include criminal sexual act in the first degree, attempted rape in the first degree, and sexual abuse in the first degree. The most serious of these -- criminal sexual act -- carries a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison. His arraignment is scheduled for June 6.  [End of post.]
If you felt the center of gravity in the AmLaw 100 shift slightly today in the direction of Georgetown, Delaware (pop. 6,500), here's why: Delaware Chancellor William Chandler III announced today he's leaving the bench next month to open a Georgetown office for Wilson Sonsini.
The Senate today voted against bringing Goodwin Liu's nomination to the Ninth Circuit to a floor vote, effectively end his judicial bid.
David Daugherty, an administrative law judge in West Virginia, is gaining notice for an unusual (and some say troubling) record on the bench. When people seek social security disability benefits in Daugherty's court, the judge usually awards payments.
The Securities and Exchange Commission voted unanimously yesterday to to propose tougher regulations for credit ratings firms in an effort to prevent ratings from being tainted by the salespeople who market them to issuers.
There's legal intrigue in the sports world today -- and no, it doesn't involve the BCS. Jim Crane, the would be new owner of the Houston Astros, may have to answer an earlier encounter with the Equal Opportunity Employment Commission.
Pressure is building in the business to let law firms raise capital from nonlaywers. Yesterday, plaintiffs' firm Jacoby & Meyers filed suits in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut claiming that their state rules barring outsiders from owning stakes in firms unconstitutionally restricts interstate commerce.
Events are moving exceptionally quickly in the Dominique Strauss-Kahn affair.
At its most basic level, the notion of diplomatic immunity makes sense: a country ensures another that its representatives -- typically in the host country for diplomatic purposes -- aren't prosecuted (or persecuted) with the host country's law.
Let's bring you a little midday update on the situation involving Goodwin Liu, arguably the most controversial of all of President Obama's lower-court nominees.
Legal writing expert Bryan Garner, the head of LawProse, has had the good fortune to sit down with many Supreme Court justices and ask them about their writing do's and don'ts. And now these secrets are yours for taking
California legislation that seeks to limit CD and DVD piracy could run headlong into the 4th Amendment, which prohibits unreasonable searches and seizures.
